OSHTEMO TWP., Mich. – A Kalamazoo-area legislator introduced a bill Wednesday in Lansing that would establish a system to issue public alerts in the event of an active shooter situation.

State Representative Brant Iden, R-Oshtemo Township, introduced House Bill 5442 today.  Michigan State Police would be responsible for the system.  According to a press release, the system would be used to “rapidly disseminate information in an efficient, effective manner to radio, television, and other communication devices, such as cell phones.”

“This operates like a traditional amber alert system,” Rep. Iden said in a press release. “The state police will use the quickest possible means to spread awareness while they work to control the situation and put a stop to violent threats.”

“The recent, tragic shootings in Kalamazoo have highlighted the role accurate and timely information plays in ensuring the public safety,” said Rep. Iden. “The faster our communities are aware of a dangerous and violent situation, the better citizens can prepare and find safety.”

Six people were killed and two were wounded in a shooting spree by an Uber driver in Kalamazoo on February 20.
