MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. -- A friend who was with the man who allegedly shot three people after a Muskegon Heights basketball game testified during a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Calvin Owens, 19, said he didn't know that 21-year-old Clarence McCaleb brought a gun with him Feb. 9 when the two traveled from Grand Rapids to watch the game.

Owens claims that a group of about 40 people from the school were hassling him and McCaleb at the concession area at halftime.  After the game, Owens said a crowd of people continued to bother them and one of his friends was sucker punched.  McCaleb allegedly opened fire on the group, injuring three people.

According to the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office, McCaleb was confronted by a Muskegon County Sheriff's Deputy after the initial shooting, and the deputy shot him.

The prosecutor's office says that the investigation so far shows the deputy took the necessary action to save his life and save others at the scene.

McCaleb is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, felony firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.  He could face additional charges in the case.
