BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Two children were hurt after being ran over by vehicles on Friday.

The first incident happened around 2:30 p.m. when police say that a 4-year-old boy riding his bike was hit by a female driver when she backed her car off her driveway and into W. Gougac Street near Meachem Avenue.  He was dragged a couple feet by the car before he was pulled to safety.

He suffered an injured ankle, as well as road rash on his body and head. The woman driving the car was cooperative with officers and was reportedly shaken by the incident. She was cited for driving on a suspended license and not yielding while backing out of a driveway.

The second incident happened around 6 p.m. Police say that a 2-year-old boy was playing in a yard in the 100 block of Fremont Street. The boy’s father was expecting his 22-year-old male friend to come over to get help with car repairs. When he arrived, he rolled up in the driveway and didn’t see the boy run in front of his car. The boy was knocked down and the car rolled over his abdomen.

The driver took the boy and his father to the emergency room at Bronson Hospital in Battle Creek. The boy was stabilized before being taken to Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo.

Hospital staff called the police about the incident, but before they arrived, the driver had left. He was later located, and said that he left because he was afraid and didn’t know what to do because he didn’t have a driver’s license. He was arrested on charges of failing to report an injury crash, driving on a suspended license, and additional traffic warrants. Police say that he is being cooperative with police and is lodged at Calhoun County Jail.

Police urge drivers and pedestrians to be extra careful on the road with warmer weather coming, and to be mindful of children playing.
