RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia State Police say a trooper has died after a shooting at a Greyhound bus station in Richmond. During a press conference, VSP said that Chad Dermyer was originally from Jackson, Michigan.

VSP Superintendent Col. Steven Flaherty says Trooper Dermyer died Thursday after being shot multiple times.

Authorities have identified the gunman as 34-year-old James Brown III of Aurora, Ill.

Police say Brown shot Dermyer several times at the Greyhound bus station Thursday before Brown was killed by two other troopers.    Dermyer approached Brown at the bus station when he pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the trooper.

Police have not said what motivated the shooting.

Authorities say two women were also injured in the shooting but are expected to recover.

One of them is a member of the Bingham University track team who was heading to a meet at William & Mary.

The Greyhound station is west of the city’s downtown area, across from Richmond’s minor league baseball stadium and within a former industrial area. It is on a main thoroughfare connecting a residential district to the stadium and nearby restaurants.

City Councilwoman Rita Trammell was at the scene of the shooting and says it was a “senseless act.”
