HOLLAND, Mich. –  Allen Timmerman, owner of Allen’s Hair Care Center, will be closing his doors after serving the community more than half a century. Thursday, April 21, will be Timmerman’s final day of business.

Ever since he was 19, Timmerman has been making people smile, laugh, and walk out of his barber shop feeling like a million bucks.

“I do them each a half-hour, I don’t rush them,” said Timmerman. “And I always give everybody a backrub.”

His intentional business plan has attracted hundreds of faithful customers who’ve turned into friends over the past five decades. It’s time he says was well spent.

“It did go fast,” Timmerman said. “If you like what you’re doing and you like your job, you really don’t have to go to work. It’s just that good.”

Timmerman was an employee at Ray’s Barber Shop off West 16th Street for five years before becoming partner. Then in 1970 he became the owner of the business and changed the name to Allen’s Hair Care Center.

Now after years of tradition and $19 haircuts, Timmerman has sold the building and is getting ready to retire.

“I’m gonna be 75 in May and I thought it’s about right,” said Timmerman. “I’m still healthy, I’d like to do a few things. It’s been a good run.”

Timmerman plans to spend time with his wife, ten grandchildren, and play a few rounds of golf. His barber shop was bought by 16th Street Lofts LLC who plans to rent out the apartment in the back of the building while keeping the front of it a retail space.
