BRANCH COUNTY, Mich – Two suspects are being held at the Branch County jail on drug related charges after authorities say the pair led them on a dangerous high-speed chase through multiple West Michigan counties.

Wednesday afternoon, officers with the Fremont Police Department in northern Indiana acted on information they’d received involving a wanted subject and a possible methamphetamine lab at a home in the 800 block of East Toledo Street in Fremont.

Local and county authorities attempted to stop a vehicle seen leaving the residence, but the driver refused to stop, leading to a police pursuit.  Authorities chased the vehicle across the Indiana-Michigan border into Branch and Hillsdale Counties before the driver tried driving through a field and got stuck in a swamp.

Investigators say the pursuit in southwest Michigan exceeded 100 miles per hour at some points.

Two suspects in the vehicle were arrested after the crash into the swamp:

  • Jeremy Hurd, 29
  • Ashley Rose Eichinger, 23

Both are facing charges for possessing methamphetamine and for operating and maintaining a methamphetamine lab after evidence was seized from the vehicle they were in.  Hurd is also facing a charge of resisting law enforcement following the chase.  All the charges are felonies.

Several police agencies were involved in the incident, including the Fremont Police Department, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, Angola City Police Department, Clear Lake Police Department, Steuben County Communications, Branch County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police.
