DOWAGIAC, Mich. — A man from Benton Harbor was arrested after he allegedly fired several rounds into an occupied apartment complex earlier this month.

Officials with the Dowagiac Police Department say the shooting happened the evening of April 11, at the Eagle’s Trace Apartment complex. Witnesses told police that before the shooting, they saw two people arguing. During the investigation, police say they believe that argument was about a drug deal gone bad between the suspect and another subject.

The subject fled into the apartment when confronted by the suspect. Police say the suspect left but returned later to fire several rounds into one of the occupied apartments. The unit that was shot at, however, belonged to an innocent third party. The suspect then left the scene, and is believed to have given heroin to his driver as payment for the ride.

The suspect- who was positively identified by witnesses – is Karl Ross, 29, of Benton Harbor, was arrested early Friday morning in St. Joseph. He was turned over to the Cass County Jail and is being held on a $200,000 bond for being a fourth time habitual offender.

According to police, Ross was arraigned on the following charges on Friday:

1. Discharge a Firearm in or at a building
2. Assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder
3. Carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent
4. Felon in possession of a firearm
5. Felony firearm
