ROCKFORD, Mich. — A West Michigan family has been nominated for the fifth annual Local Hero contest run by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association as well as agencies like Clock Mobility and BraunAbility.

Liz and Dustin David met in middle school and have been tied at the hip ever since. They went on to marry and have three children; their youngest, Isiah, is 5.

Nearly a year into life, Isiah was diagnosed  with Merosin Negative Congenital Muscular Dystrophy — a disease that's extremely rare and progressive.  Isiah is one in about only 800 people who have it... and because of his diagnosis he is bound to a wheelchair.

All was going well when the family's van caught fire recently. The vehicle was a total loss, but luckily everyone made it out OK. Liz says insurance won't cover the loss and now the David family has no way to get Isiah around safely.

They were nominated by a good friend, Allison Michaels, for the 2016 Local Hero contest.  They're asking that people take the time to hear their story and help them win a wheelchair accessible van for little Isiah.  You can vote for Isiah here.

Until then, you can check out the family's Go Fund Me page for more information here.
