GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteer drivers for their Road to Recovery Program.

This year, an estimated 56,530 Michigan residents will learn they have cancer. Most patients can’t afford extra gasoline, don’t own a car, and have no access to public transportation.

In Kent County alone last year, the program provided a total of 966 rides for cancer patients to and from their appointments through the Road to Recovery Program.

Although this is quite the accomplishment, the ACS still had 545 more requested rides that they couldn’t fulfill, and they’re seeking volunteers to help.

In order to volunteer you must have a valid driver’s license, a safe and reliable vehicle and proof of automobile insurance. You must be 18 or older and have a good driving history.

The American Cancer Society provides free training for drivers and conducts criminal background and driving record checks.
