GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Grand Rapids police officers will begin taking implicit-bias training within the next couple of months, now that the City Commission has approved funding for the plan.

The training is part of the city’s 12-point plan to improve community and police relations.  Nine of 12 points are now complete, including implementing body cameras for officers, requiring outside police agencies to investigate any Grand Rapids police shooting and reviewing police and fire hiring practices.

Implicit bias training is different than  regular diversity training.  The training is developed to help individuals learn about biases that they don’t know they have, such as a fear of the unknown or something that is culturally ingrained.

The funding is not to exceed $46,500.
