Shoulder pain is a very common problem for active adults.

Causes of shoulder pain include:

  • Overuse injury
  • Athletic injury
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Impingement
  • Arthritis

Dr. Peter Ugolini is an orthopedic surgeon at Spectrum Health who specializes in shoulder and elbow. To keep your shoulders limber and to prevent any injuries, Dr. Ugolini recommends a series of simple stretches:

  • Reach for the sky and get your arms all the way over your head
  • Try to scratch your back and both over the shoulder and back up behind your back
  • Give a friend a hug, then bring your arms out in front and then across your body, one at a time
  • Get into a relaxed position with your hands behind your head and then drop your arms back behind you.
