BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- John Daly joked on Wednesday that one of his favorite parts of the PGA Champions Tour is that being 50 years old means he's still a rookie.

The "rookie" -- and two-time major winner on the PGA Tour -- will make his Harbor Shores debut on Thursday at the 77th Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor. It will be Daly's third tournament -- and second senior major -- with a group of golfers who helped Daly when he was first starting off as a pro almost 30 years ago.

"The guys that play the Champions Tour here are unselfish human beings. They got great hearts," he said Wednesday. "I always remember the stuff these guys did for me when I first came out here -- not only good, but when I did bad, they made sure to tell me I did bad. They are just a bunch of great guys and I love competing against them."

Daly will be one of several golfers trying to knock off two-time defending champion Colin Montgomerie, who has seen Daly's game mature during his short time on the Champions Tour.
“His course management skills have improved a lot," Montgomerie said Wednesday. "Every par-4 or par-5 was just a thrash with the driver. Now it’s a more conservative approach. They still go a long way, but it’s a more conservative approach -- and I think that is good for John Daly.”

Daly tees off at 1:40 p.m. on Thursday.
