Summer is upon us, and just like our plants and lawns, our bodies need water.

Water is a critical component of our body function and structure, making up approximately 55 percent of women’s bodies-and key organs. These organs include muscles, heart, brain, and lungs.

Dr. Diana Bitner, woman's health and menopause specialist, says that the consequences for not drinking enough water can be subtle, but severe dehydration can affect our daily function.

Signs and symptoms of dehydration include:

  • Thirst
  • Fatigue, poor energy
  • Headache or migraine
  • Concentrated urine
  • Hot flashes, night sweats, chills
  • Dry skin

Body function depends on water for cooling and energy.  When the body becomes dehydrated, the muscles can get hotter quicker, and get tight.  Without adequate water, women can get hot flashes, muscle spasms, and fatigue, which are also signs of menopause.
