HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A man is in critical condition after he was pulled from a pond in Holland Township where he was trapped in a submerged vehicle for about 40 minutes.

MLive is reporting Wednesday morning that the man has died.

Holland Township firefighters and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department dive team were called to the scene around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday after witnesses saw a vehicle drive into the pond at the Lakeshore Medical Campus. The emergency crews had to retrieve the vehicle before they could free its sole occupant.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department says the driver, 51-year-old Jeffrey Adkins of Holland, was unconscious when he was removed from the vehicle.

Adkins was taken to Holland Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening.
