Storm chances greatly diminished today

WEST MICHIGAN — It’s certainly going to be hot and humid today across the FOX 17 viewing area. Some areas never saw their temperature fall below 70° last night, and that warm start will lead to the hottest afternoon of the year in many locations. In addition, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has much of the area in a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening:

We certainly will have the heat and humidity necessary to produce afternoon thunderstorms, but the better instability will remain just to our south. For that reason, I think most of the viewing area will remain rain and thunderstorm free this afternoon and evening. Future Track HD is also going with a dry forecast for the area this afternoon:

If any thunderstorms do develop this afternoon and evening, they’ll most likely pop up well to the south of I-96. So places like Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and South Haven do have a slight chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Later tonight, a cold front will make its way through the area. This front, however, doesn’t ignite much in the way of shower and storm activity either:

As you can see, a few showers and storms are possible on the east side of the state, but we should stay rain-free here.

Behind this cold front, we expect cooler and drier air to move into West Michigan for the latter half of the weekend.
