SPRING LAKE, Mich. — A Grand Rapids man has died in the hospital after Ottawa County deputies say he fell off a boat and into the water early Saturday morning.

Deputies say he was underwater for about 35 minutes.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said it happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday at the Barrett Boat Works, located at 821 W. Savidge St. in Spring Lake.

The owner of the boat says he jumped in the water to try and find the man who went overboard, but he wasn’t able to find him. Dive teams from two departments were dispatched to the scene and eventually were able to locate the man.

Later Saturday morning, deputies identified the man as Brian Basarabski, 34, of Grand Rapids.

Late Saturday afternoon, deputies said they had been notified by the Kent County Medical Examiner’s Office that Basarabski had died at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The incident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
