When taking a trip to the upper peninsula, you know you've arrived "up north" once you see the iconic Mackinac Bridge.

The Mackinac Bridge is the gateway to the upper peninsula. Every year, about four million vehicles travel across the four mile bridge.

The bridge was built in 1957, and will be celebrating its 60th anniversary next year.

The bridge is about 552 feet above the water, the pier is about 210 feet from bedrock, and the very center of the bridge  stands in about 300 feet of water.

The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge, held up by 1580 cable wires the thickness of a pencil.

There are multiple events that happen on the bridge between April and October. There are multiple running, walking, and biking events that allow people to travel on the bridge other than by car.
