WYOMING, Mich. — Alyssa Canales said arsonist, car jacker and burglar aren’t nouns she would’ve imagined using to describe her stepfather Casey Marvin.

Marvin, 34, was arraigned Friday in Wyoming District Court for allegedly setting several fires and other crimes. The spree happened on Tuesday, July 5th.

“I still can’t believe it when I read the news. It’s just really hard,” 16-year-old Canales told FOX 17.

She said, “I’ve never seen him like this. He’s always been such a happy person, especially around us kids.”

Canales showed FOX 17 a specially-made family photo book with pictures of her, her mom, and her brother with Marvin. She recalled the good times. But she said her stepfather began acting strange, recently became more distant, and aggressive.

The teen said she was visiting with her mother and Marvin who were staying with a female relative who lives in Wyoming.

“She has a daughter and ya know, Casey’s been acting up and she didn’t want him around.”

Canales explained, “They left at like two in the morning, and that was the last time I saw them. I was the one who opened the door. I was the last person to see them.”

“We just couldn’t have it around her child. So they had to leave and that’s when everything happened.”

In court, Marvin asked the judge to lower his $1 million bond so he can get out and take care of his family.

Marvin told the judge, “I got a 3-year-old granddaughter at home, and I’m currently the only supporter money-wise. So it’s not helping my family or anybody that I’m in here right now.”

The judge denied Marvin’s request for a lower bond because of the severity of the crimes and said anyone facing these charges might be motivated to go into hiding.
