LOWELL, Mich. — A special group of young people are making and selling rugs in downtown Lowell.

Ability Weavers opened earlier this week at 215 West Main Street in Lowell. The employees have a variety of disabilities, ranging from autism to cerebral palsy to vision impairments.  The store provides them with a supportive work environment where they can earn a wage and feel a sense of purpose.  In fact, the store's motto is "Weaving with a Purpose."

Owner Beryl Bartkus has two daughters, one of whom has autism.  She tells us that she was inspired to open a store that provides a low-stress working environment for young adults entering the work world.  She and her employees have been working on rugs, storage benches and other products since March.

"We're a Christian family," says Bartkus. "We believe that God has a purpose for everybody, including those with disabilities."

The store is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  You can get more information at their website, AbilityWeavers.com .
