WALKER, Mich. – It’s never too early to start spreading Christmas cheer, but a group of Ottawa-North Kent Blue Star Mothers are using a holiday staple for a much more solemn purpose. Today will kick off the group’s fundraising season, and they’re asking for donations meant to go towards wreaths – not to hang on your door, but to be placed on the graves of veterans in the area.

Beginning at 10 a.m., the group is partnering with Sobie Meats at 3450 Remembrance Road to hold a fundraiser for the wreaths. They are encouraging you to come out, enjoy some food and drinks, and even participate in a hot dog eating contest.

The Blue Star Mothers are hoping to raise $78,000 to buy wreaths to be laid on the graves of some 5,200 soldiers in the memorial park. For more information on today’s fundraiser, call 616-453-7201 or check out Sobie Meats website.
