SALEM TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The smoke detectors in a Salem Township home failed to alert a family to a fire in their home, but they got out safely anyway.

The fire at the home on Secluded Acres Drive near 30th Street and 138th Avenue in Allegan County was reported around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

The family heard popping noises but no alerts from their smoke alarms, which fire officials said were working. The smoke alarms may not have gone off because the fire was above them in the attic, said Salem Township Assistant Fire Chief Tom Dykstra.

The home was severely damaged, but the family of two adults and four children escaped the fire before anyone was hurt.

The family plans to stay with relatives and receiving help from the Red Cross.
