KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Hundreds of people attended a Black Lives Matter rally Friday in downtown Kalamazoo.

Bronson Park was shut down, filled to the brim with people showing their support for the movement.

"We wanted to bring light to all the things that were happening to people of color, specifically black people, not just in Kalamazoo, but across the nation," said Jacquis Robertson, a board member for the Kalamazoo chapter of Black Lives Matter.  "And we wanted to do that in a very peaceful way, but in a way that would uplift the community and to give people a chance to speak that normally wouldn't have a chance to speak and perform that ability."

Before Friday night's rally, police connected with organizers to help keep things peaceful.
