GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Grand Rapids City Commission listened to public comment on a plan that would make food trucks more accessible in the city.
The current rule for food trucks is that they're only allowed during special events or on private property. The commission is considering a proposal that would allow the trucks to operate in public spaces five days a week with restrictions: they would have to stay 100 feet away from any restaurants and cannot be open after midnight.
The city is promoting the two year pilot plan as a way to develop small businesses. Supporters say food trucks can be a path for entrepreneurs to open up their own brick and mortar restaurants.
Some who attended the meeting expressed their concerns that allowing food trucks to operate in public may bring increased competition to established restaurants, siphoning off business.
The City Commission will vote on the plan August 23rd and will listen to all public comments until then.
