WEST MICHIGAN — Rain has been heavy across parts of the FOX 17 viewing area already this morning, and more locally heavy rainfall is possible throughout the day.

Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms will continue to develop and fade through the day, creating pockets of locally heavy rainfall. Here is a look at the radar as of this early morning writing:

Radar _Currently

As you can see, it’s raining heavily in some areas and not at all in others. This should be the trend through the day. Rainfall totals have ranged from zero in places like Battle Creek this morning, to a doppler estimated 2 inches or more in portions of Ionia and Clinton counties. Actual measured rainfall totals have been over an inch in some areas:

The heavy rain is being created by an upper level disturbance moving slowly across the area, and a slow moving surface low to our south. Rain continues to develop and fade on the north side of this low, and the precipitation continues to drift to the north and northwest.

In fact, the above area of low pressure near the Ohio River is moving so slowly now that we’ve extended the rain chance into Sunday. Finally, it looks like this low will pull far enough away from us on Monday that we’ll escape with a dry forecast.
