HOWARD CITY, Mich. (AP) — State officials say construction work is beginning on bridges over Rice Creek and Tamarac Creek on the Fred Meijer White Pine Trail in Montcalm County.

The trail is popular with non-motorized users all year and snowmobile riders during winter.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says work on the trail in Howard City starts Monday. It will consist of abutment replacement and pier removal. Additionally, crews will place a 60-foot prefabricated bridge over Rice Creek and an 84-foot prefabricated bridge over Tamarack Creek.

Officials say the White Pine Trail has been rerouted temporarily to Federal Road, bypassing both bridges. The detour is posted. Construction is expected to be finished in November.
