GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Just in time for your back to school preparations, there is a new form of head lice to be aware of.

This "super" lice is spreading across the country and this bug could be worse than ever.

This batch of lice is more resistant to over-the-counter medications, but is physically the same as other outbreaks.  Reports of the lice have spread through 48 states, including Michigan.

Doctors at West Michigan Pediatrics tell FOX 17 that they've already treated five or six cases of lice this season.  They also say they have received numerous phone calls from parents puzzled by why the over-the-counter medications aren't working as well as usual.

Doctors say trying to treat lice with over-the-counter medications first is still recommended, since prescription medication can be expensive.  Prescription medication is almost 100% effective in treating the lice.

The "super" lice are most commonly found in kids ages 6 to 12, but can be found in older kids and even adults.
