EAST CHINA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Fire crews are working to extinguish a blaze at a power plant along the St. Clair River, northeast of Detroit.

DTE Energy says in a statement that employees at its St. Clair Power Plant in East China Township were safely evacuated Thursday and there are no known injuries at the facility.

The utility says a coal-fired generation unit that produces electricity caught fire.

The blaze was reported about 6:30 p.m. Roads in the area have been closed and traffic was being detoured away from the plant.

The Times-Herald of Port Huron reports that the plant has been in service since 1953 and employs 280 workers.

Detroit-based DTE Energy said in June that coal-fired units at the facility are among eight slated to be shut down within the next seven years.
