DETROIT (AP) — About 2,500 General Motors employees have volunteered to help renovate a Detroit school, restore homes in the neighborhood and improve some parks in the area.

The weeklong work in the Cody Rouge community on Detroit’s west side kicks off Monday and is part of a company-wide volunteerism initiative.

GM is working with the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance, Cody High School and other businesses.

Improvements will be made to a concession stand, fitness park, dugout, soccer field and pavilion at Cody High. GM employees also will distribute backpacks and school supplies Friday to students.

Volunteers from Quicken Loans and DTE Energy also will take on projects in the area.
