Despite the early morning rain, more than 1,000 people laced up their shoes and took on the 7th annual Grand Rapids Mud Run.

Fox 17's Alyssa Hearin was right outside the Kentwood Community Church where it all took place.

The race is a fundraiser for the organization, ‘Never the Same’, with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards it, and believe it or not, the runner's' muddy shoes at the end of the race were used for a good cause too.

“We’ll clean them up and give them to the Holland Rescue Mission so will take care of them so donate them and that’s a good thing,” says Coach Pitts.

And this year’s course? Well they decided to kick it up a notch…

“We’ve got brand new obstacles this year we have something called our double a’s which is a flat wall on one side and a ladder wall on the other. As you go up and over people are coming under you in a different direction,” says race director Kyle Wood.
