KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Recounts of a number of close township elections in the August primary in Kalamazoo County have been completed and a couple races have had their outcomes changed.

In the Richland Township Trustee election, Joseph Kaywood and Bear Priest ended up tied for the final spot on the November ballot with 359 votes.  Kaywood won a drawing after the August 2 vote.  But, the recount gave Bear Priest one more vote, so he’ll move on now to the November general election, 360 to 359.

In Texas Township, the treasurer race ended in a tie (620 to 620) between incumbent Paul Cutting and challenger Trish Roberts. Cutting won a draw during a canvass and was declared the winner.  However, after the recount, Cutting ended up with 621 votes and Roberts had 624.  Roberts was declared the winner and moves on to the November general election.

Two other races were recounted but the results did not change – Schoolcraft Township Clerk and Texas Township Trustee, where Catherine DiBiaggio challenged the results.

The recounts were performed by the Kalamazoo County Board of Canvassers.
