KALAMAZOO, Mich. — An officer was assaulted with a bottle and a woman was shot in separate incidents the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety has dealt with this Labor Day Weekend.

First, a man pointed a gun at a KDPS officer who was talking to a crowd of people just after midnight Friday night. The man took off but was arrested a short time later, and the gun was located by a police dog and retrieved from where it had been buried.

Then Sunday morning around 2:22 a.m., KDPS officers were dealing with a large crowd that had gathered near W. Michigan Avenue and Euclid Avenue when an officer working traffic was hit in the head with a thrown bottle. The officer was treated at the hospital and will recover while the 25-year-old man who threw the bottle was later located and arrested.

Not long after that, a woman was injured in a drive-by shooting around 3:34 a.m. Sunday near Lafayette Avenue and Redwood Avenue. The woman, a 21-year-old from Sterling Heights, was treated at Bronson Hospital and is expected to recover. The man believed to have done the shooting was arrested after the vehicle he was in crashed into a tree and he had fled on foot. KDPS identified the man as a 21-year-old from Ohio.
