WYOMING, Mich. -- Wyoming Police say an officer shot and killed a 25-year-old man Wednesday evening.

The incident happened in the area of 32nd Street and Eastern Avenue, according to Wyoming Police Capt. Kim Koster.

Koster said during a press conference that the man pointed a gun at the officer and the officer shot him. She said the man was a suspect in a theft from a local gun store that happened at roughly 5:24 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the man allegedly stole a handgun and fled on a bicycle.  A K9 unit later located the bike.

According to a release from Wyoming Police, someone called police at about 7:15 p.m. to report a man in the area of 32nd and Eastern "with what appeared to be a gun in his back pocket."

When police confronted the suspect, Koster said he pointed a gun at the officer and the officer shot him in self defense.

A stolen handgun was recovered from the scene, Koster said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.  Koster said during the press conference that he was 25 years old.  His identity was not released.

The officer is on paid administrative leave.  He was not injured.

The investigation into the shooting will be conducted by the Kent County Sheriff's Department.

"This was an experienced officer who is a trained and seasoned professional," Wyoming Public Safety Director James Carmody said in a release.  "We are grateful that he and other members of the public were not harmed tonight."

This is a developing story.  We'll update it as more information becomes available.
