People jump to help store that lost contents to fire

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — People lined up on Saturday to help out a store that lost all its contents to a fire early Thursday morning that was later determined to be arson.

A fire outside Ken’s Fruit Market, located at 3500 Plainfield Ave. NE, not only damaged that store but a pair of adjoining businesses — Big Lots and the Africa’s Child Thrift Store — also suffered smoke damage.

Africa’s Child is a resale shop that lost all of the donated items inside its store to smoke damage. On the day of the fire, a benefit was organized from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday urging people to bring in slightly used items to help the store replenish its inventory.

Their biggest need coming up was for fall clothing, winter clothing and Christmas decorations.

On Friday, investigators determined the fire outside of Ken’s Fruit Market to be arson.
