BATTLE CREEK, Mich.– The City of Battle Creek announced on Thursday that Battle Creek Area Habitat for Humanity is now a certified Community Development Housing Organization.

Now that Battle Creek Habitat for Humanity is a certified CHDO, this means they can receive federal HOME funds to rehabilitate vacant homes.

Additionally, the city must legally set aside 15 percent of federal funds for them to proceed with their operations.  The city received $219,000 in HOME Investment Partnership funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Out of the $219,000, Habitat of Battle Creek received $35,000 to rehabilitate their latest home at 438 W. Jackson in Battle Creek. It was a home built in 2009 and left vacant and abandoned after a fire in 2014.
