Girl, 10, drowns in Oceana County

PENTWATER, Mich. — A 10-year-old Lansing girl drowned Monday in Oceana County.

The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office says officials were called to Lake Michigan north of Charles Mears State Park at about 3:47 p.m.

According to a release, Hanna Harris went missing in the water after falling off a paddle board.  She was not wearing a life jacket.

Harris was recovered from the water before officials arrived at the scene.

Emergency responders attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful, according to a release.

    Sad story, and my heart goes out to the family. I think many people – adults as well as children and teens – don’t realize that it’s not just common sense but the law to have a lifejacket on board any type of watercraft for each person it is carrying. I think some people have the erroneous perception that if a craft doesn’t have a motor, you’re not required to have a lifejacket. I would support spending some public money on public service announcements about this in Spring and early Summer. I wonder how many lives a few billboards could save.
