HART, Mich. — A man accused of leading police in Oceana County on a high-speed pursuit is recovering in the hospital, after police say he crashed a stolen vehicle while under the influence early Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., dispatchers were notified that a blue Dodge Caravan was stolen from the village of Shelby, and alerted officers to be on the lookout for it. Within ten minutes, a patrolman from Hart saw the stolen vehicle on Polk Road.

The officer attempted to stop the driver, who did pull over just long enough for the officer to exit his vehicle and approach the vehicle. At that point, the suspect sped off.  An Oceana County Sheriff’s Deputy had just arrived at the scene, and started a pursuit.

At the intersection of 72nd Avenue and W. Scout Road, the vehicle went off the road and struck a large stack of 20 bushel crates. The suspect was knocked unconscious, and suffered non life-threatening injuries. He is described as a 24-year-old man from Shelby. Police say he will face numerous charges, including Fleeing & Eluding and O.W.I.
