DETROIT, Mich. – The Detroit News announced for the first time in 143 years, they are not endorsing a Republican candidate for President.

Instead, the paper announced their selection is Libertarian Gary Johnson.  In their endorsement editorial, the board says there is only one reason they are not choosing the GOP nominee this year: Donald Trump.

The 2016 nominee offered by the Republican Party rubs hard against the editorial board’s values as conservatives and Americans. Donald Trump is unprincipled, unstable and quite possibly dangerous. He can not be president.

The endorsement goes to say that they realize Johnson is the “longest of longshots”, but that they made their endorsement with their conscience.

The paper says that only three times in their 143 years they did not endorse a Republican.  In those years, they did not offer an endorsement (twice during Franklin Roosevelt’s terms and in 2004 between George Bush Jr. and John Kerry.)

Tuesday, the Arizona Republic, which has endorsed Republican presidential candidates every year since 1890, endorsed Democrat Hillary Clinton.
