ALLENDALE, Mich. — Attempted murder charges are pending against a suspect who police say shot a man, leaving him critically injured near the Allendale campus of Grand Valley State University early Saturday morning.

Authorities are not identifying the 23-year-old suspect until the individual is arraigned on charges of assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

A 28-year-old man—who is not a student at the university—was shot around 2 a.m. on Saturday at the Lake Michigan Drive apartment complex, located north of the GVSU campus. Police said he was found conscious and alert in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

The man is recovering in the hospital, the sheriff’s office said Sunday.

Police say the victim and suspect knew each other.

Two men were taken into custody for questioning shortly after the shooting on Saturday.
