EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – East Grand Rapids Public Safety is encouraging residents to lock the doors of their garages and vehicles after a string of recent burglaries.

Officers say eight vehicles have been stolen in EGR since April.  Six of those have been stolen since the beginning of August.  In each case, the owner had left the doors unlocked and the keys in the vehicle.

Officers say that there has also been an increase of thefts from unlocked vehicles and one bike was stolen from an unlocked garage.

Investigators say they think the crimes are related.  The most recent thefts have all taken place around or after midnight:

  • Monday Oct. 3 – Items taken from four unlocked vehicles and one car stolen
  • Tuesday Oct. 12 – Items taken from six unlocked vehicles and a bike taken from an unlocked garage
  • Wednesday Oct. 13 – Items taken from one unlocked car and one car stolen

“Prevention is the most effective way to keep our City safe,” said Captain Rick Buikema in a press release. “It takes a half-second to lock your car, which could be the difference between keeping your property safe and having it stolen.”

EGR Public Safety encourages residents to call 9-1-1 if they see suspicious behavior.  If you ever have any questions or have information on these incidents, please contact the EGR Public Safety at 616.949.7010.
