GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- A hit and run accident in Grand Rapids has left a teenage boy with some serious injuries and serious questions.
On Monday, 17-year old Stephen Copado was riding his moped home from school when he was hit by a pickup truck. The driver of the car took off, leaving Stephen to walk a mile home with a broken hand and mild concussion.
Unfortunately, Grand Rapids Police don't have any leads. All they know is a black pickup truck hit Stephen before taking off, leaving him to fend for himself. Stephen's mother, Sabrina Gallo, says it was a scary situation getting the phone call while she was away for work.
"That was horrible," said Gallo. "I didn't know what to do. Within about five seconds of getting the phone call, I was in the car and on my way back."
Gallo's son was riding his moped home from school around 4:00 pm. He was hit at the intersection of Diamond and Sweet NE.
"It appears that a black truck had run the stop sign and hit him," said Gallo. "Next thing he knew, he was looking up through his helmet at the sky, on his back and heard tires squealing."
The crash would send Stephen to the hospital with a broken hand and a mild concussion. The bone fracture in his hand requires surgery scheduled for Monday. Stephen's moped is also in rough shape.
"You hear the stories, you watch the news and you never think it's going to happen to you and then it does," said Gallo. "At this point, it's been four or five days and it's still sinking in."
So far, Grand Rapids Police don't have any solid leads; all Stephen could remember was a black pick-up truck driving away from the scene.
"I wish he could remember more," said Gallo.
It's a difficult thing to come to terms with and Gallo has just one request.
"Please call Grand Rapids Police," said Gallo. "I have one question. Why wouldn't you stop? You hit a kid on a moped. You could've killed him. Why wouldn't you stop?"
