WEST MICHIGAN — Many of you woke up to some loud booms of thunder and the sound of very heavy rainfall this morning. Several thousand people even woke up this morning without power!
The radar loop shows how rain moved across the lake ahead of this frontal system. At its peak this morning, this storm was producing nearly 500 lightning strikes every 15 minutes! This was likely the cause of power outages this morning. You’ll notice on the loop that shows the radar estimated precipitation as well. Most locations saw over an inch this morning.
Some of our rain gauges in our WeatherBug networks show well over an inch of rain in Ravenna and Byron Center, with Zeeland and Belding not far behind.
The airport in Grand Rapids was very close to a daily record, but unless we receive a quick burst of rain there throughout the day, the record is likely to stand. We did set a daily rainfall record at the airport in Muskegon. 1.61″ of rain fell breaking the old record of 1.03″ set back in 1914!!
As a warm front moves into our region overnight, we’re likely to warm up significantly tomorrow. The heaviest rain will stay in northern Michigan near the frontal boundary, but a few light showers can be expected to begin your day the further north of I-96 you’re located.
