KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Firefighters in Kalamazoo say that conditions were too unsafe for them to do what they do best — put out fires — due to an extreme hoarding situation at a condemned house that was on fire.

The call came in for a possible house fire on Skinner Street in Kalamazoo early Monday morning.  When crews arrived, heavy flames were seen coming from the home.

As they started preparing to fight the fire, they were encountered hoarding conditions both inside and outside the home.

Crews went into a defensive mode in fighting the fire and focused their efforts on preventing the flames from spreading to neighboring structures instead of extinguishing the fire.

The home, which had been condemned for approximately a year, due to the hoarding, is a total loss.

It is not clear what led up to the fire.
