The Heart of West Michigan United Way is looking for volunteers to help with Schools of Hope and the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition.

Schools of Hope is a program that helps children with higher learning within Grand Rapids Public Schools. They're in need of tutors for their Reading Program, who will work one-on-one with students for 30 minutes each week during the school year.

These children are slightly behind their reading level, so they need some extra attention and help.

Volunteers just need to attend a two-hour training session, which happens weekly throughout the year.

Another program in need of help is the Kent County tax Credit Coalition. Every year, millions of dollars in tax refunds and credits go unclaimed by those who need it most.

Through the 17 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites throughout the community, the Kent County Tax Coalition helps working individuals and families achieve economic success with free tax services and literacy courses.

The Tax Coalition is looking for tax prepares and greeters. Volunteer tax prepares must go through a two-day training, offered on December 3 and 10, or January 14 and 21. Greeters aren't required to go through training, but must sign a Code of Volunteer Conduct.

Interested volunteers for either program can get more information and sign up at www.hwmuw.org
