GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Police Department says a man is in custody following an assault, kidnapping, and a standoff situation on the city's southeast side.

Officers say they first responded to a call for an alleged kidnapping and assault late Saturday night around 6:30 p.m. in the 600 block of Delaware Street SE.

During their investigation, deputies learned the male suspect was seen forcing a woman inside a car against her will. That's when another woman approached the victim to help but the suspect assaulted her and fled with the victim inside the car, police say.

Then around midnight Sunday, officers were then led to the 1000 block of Merrifield Street SE and tried to make contact with the suspect. Instead, the suspect stayed inside the house for three hours forcing a standoff with police before finally he surrendered and was arrested.

Police say no officers were injured during the incident but it's not clear if the victims in this case were injured.

The suspect is only being described as a 49-year-old man.
