GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Hazmat crews have cleared the scene after a 'strange' smell prompted the evacuation of an outpatient center across the street from Spectrum Health downtown late Tuesday morning.
The smell was reported around 11:30 a.m. at 330 Barclay Avenue NE, which is the Helen DeVos Children's Outpatient Center.
While the smell and source remain a mystery, the building will remain closed to patients for the remainder of the day. Individuals with appointments at the center are encouraged to call ahead, a hospital spokesperson said.
A spokesperson for Spectrum Health said the smell was first reported on the third floor in a clinic.
No one reported being sickened by the reported smell, which quickly dissipated. Officials could not provide a definitive description of the smell that was reported.
At one point, hazmat crews brought in advanced equipment in an attempt to pinpoint the source of the smell but were unsuccessful.
The same outpatient center was evacuated three years ago after a coolant leak in an elevator shaft, a hospital spokesperson said.
