PORTAGE, Mich. — The newest dog park in Portage closed just days after it’s grand opening. Police said a dog cut it’s paw running around in the park.

“We went out and looked at it and locked it up so we can figure out where the glass was coming from,” said Kathleen Hoyle, Director of Parks and Recreation and Senior Citizen Services. “We did find the glass.”

City officials immediately closed the 2.5 acre lot, putting two locks on the gates and posting flyers on it saying “closed temporarily.” Hoyle expects it to be closed for 6-8 weeks.

“It use to be a landfill,” said Hoyle. “We’ve never had any problems there. That’s why it’s a little bit surprising. But we need to go in and figure out what’s going on.”

Glass probably surfaced after the recent rains, said Hoyle. Nonetheless, they’re being removed. The next step is to to re-soil and re-seed the grass, hoping it’ll be ready to re-open by mid-August.

“We hope everybody gonna still come with us and we’ll get this park back open,” said Hoyle. “But we’re going to make sure its the safety for our humans and animals.”
