GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Hundreds of 'Santa's helpers' gathered Saturday to build more than 1,000 bikes for West Michigan kids ahead of the holidays.

This was all for the 13th annual "Elves and More Bicycle Giveaway"  held at the Vans Delivery Warehouse.

Even Santa was on hand to make sure his elves stayed busy.

The bikes will be given out next Saturday, December 23 to a random neighborhood with children in need.

"The feeling is when you see the kids smile, seeing joy on their faces, they think man I am not getting nothing for Christmas and then all of a sudden they get a new bike," one volunteer said. "It`s just awesome to see their smiles and they`re just having a good time, that`s what it`s all about, making the kids happy."

Grand Rapids police and US census data will be used to help to find the best place to deliver those newly-made bicycles.

We will find out next week  where those bikes are headed.
