Jon Shaner, FOX 17 Meteorologist
Many natives will tell you that forecasting the weather around West Michigan is one of the toughest jobs possible. It might be challenging, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, I’m a native of the Kalamazoo area, proud to come back home in 2006 to help launch FOX 17 Morning News.
Before that, I spent time working in South Bend and Battle Creek, where I put in the training and experience to earn the AMS Television Seal of Approval. South Bend is also where my daughter Madeleine was born; my kids are the other big reason I love to call this area home. I have three now: Madeleine, Colin, and Brendan. We spend a lot of time running around to the usual family stuff like sporting events, but try to relax with a bike ride or walk around the neighborhood whenever we can. My wife, Andrea, runs a nonprofit youth field hockey club, and much of my free time is spent “volunteering” as her secretary.
Andrea and I met at Ball State University, where we both graduated with degrees in Telecommunications and Meteorology. Those years were a blast – I studied for a term at Oxford University, and I was one of the first BSU students to have a news story air on CNN and make the USA Today All-College Academic Team.
Even though I’m on TV four hours each weekday, you’re actually just as likely to see me in places you might not expect – umpiring a high school baseball game, behind a guitar in the band at church, or searching for my lost golf ball in the rough… or the woods… or that pond over there…
