Kelly Smithtemp web bioMany meteorologists will tell you that they have always loved weather, but as a child I truly always knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. I grew up on the east-side of the state in Ann Arbor but am no stranger to West Michigan as I am a Western Michigan University graduate and I am happy to be home. After graduation I found myself headed south to study Meteorology at Mississippi State University. Adapting to the southern lifestyle was fun but sometimes challenging (mostly because I couldn’t understand a word anyone said). While in school, I worked with ESPNU as a field reporter. As a sports lover it was a dream come true to report on SEC games.

I moved back north to South Dakota to challenge my forecasting and it proved to everyday. I have covered everything from grapefruit sized hail to flash flooding and record wind chills to record dew points. Forecasting in South Dakota was a great preparation for the challenges that come with forecasting in West Michigan.

Although weather is my passion I really love to get outside and enjoy it. Growing up in Michigan I have always had a love for the water. I have spent every summer at my family’s cottage swimming, boating and fishing. I also love to run outside and ride horses. I’m a huge animal lover with two very sweet dogs and would most likely own a zoo if plausible. I grew up in a big sports family so I am a die-hard Red Wings fan and cheer on both Mississippi State and WMU. I’m always up for trying and seeing new things, feel free to send me ideas so I can rediscover what I love most about West Michigan!
