DETROIT, Mich-

A police officer in Detroit was saved by his bulletproof vest Wednesday afternoon, after being shot at a funeral home on the city’s east side.

Our FOX affiliate in Detroit reports that a man in a stolen car took off from police, rammed the vehicle into a police cruiser and ran into the  Swanson Funeral Home. A short time later, investigators say he came running out the back door shooting. A construction worker who was outside at the time says an officer was shot in the back while trying to shield him from gunfire. The Detroit Police Commander says the officer was saved by his bulletproof vest and is in “good shape”.

As for the suspect, who had been wanted for assault with intent to murder, he was shot multiple times but is expected to recover and is in police custody.

The police department has not released the officer’s name, but we’re told he has been with the department for eleven years and works Special Ops.
